Character Name: Kael'thas Sunstrider
Series: Warcraft
Age: Adult, never really specified to his exact age. I doubt he's older than a couple hundred years, though- he's probably just around his first century. The Night Elves he encounters call him "young", but everyone is pretty young when you're more than 10,000 years old.
From When?: After his defeat at Tempest Keep, as he's near death and prior to his rescue by Priestess Delrissa.
Inmate/Warden: Inmate. Kael's story was definitely one of a downward spiral from good to evil- he started off a hero in Warcraft 3, and was slowly manipulated and gave in to his anger until he became a raid boss in World of Warcraft: The Burning Crusade. I'd love to be able to explore "redeeming" him to bring him back to being a hero, in a sense. To do this, I'll have to pull him from just after his defeat at Tempest Keep, before he is driven completely mad as we see in The Magister's Terrace.
That said, after time goes by, I think he might possibly make a really good Warden.
Item: N/A
Abilities/Powers: His abilities will be greatly reduced, but I'll go ahead and give a basic run-down here. I'm combining abilities from Warcraft 3 and World of Warcraft:
Arcane Magic:
Arcane Disruption- does damage around him and disorients those hit by it.
Shock Barrier- absorbs damage
Nether Beam- deals a large amount of damage, targeted.
Mana Siphon/Mana Tap- Kicking it old school and rolling the Blood Mage spell and old Blood Elf racial ability into one. Kael can siphon magical power from living creatures or objects, allowing him to refill his own mana resources.
Fire Magic
Flamestrike- Ground area, calls down a pillar of flame that causes the ground to burn over a short time.
Fireball- Targeted, "basic" fire spell.
Pyroblast- Targeted, large fire damage.
Phoenix- He can summon a Phoenix to aid him- specifically, his pet Al'ar.
Other Abilities
Mind Control- Kael'thas can control the minds of a player (or small group), allowing him to use their abilities and control them, like puppets.
Banish- Forces a target partially into the nether. They move slower, and take additional magic damage (Going off of the Warcraft 3 Banish here, not as it's currently in WoW).
Gravity Lapse- He can reverse gravity around targets, causing them to float in the air.
Verdant Spheres- Kael can use these three fiery orbs to siphon power for each evil creature he kills, adding extra strength to his fire spells.
IN LASTVOYAGES:
To tone him down, I'll say he's locked to everything but the most basic of spells- light damage shielding, some very basic fire conjuring and control, and can levitate small objects. He will possess no verdant spheres, though by this point he should have two. He'll be locked to his mind control abilities, though he might seem very charming when he feels the need to be (more as a charismatic way instead of actual mind control. I don't feel this is too far beyond the abilities of a "normal" boss-level Blood Elf- the current racial leader has a mass Charm ability).
Personality: Kael'thas was raised as a prince, and it certainly shows. He carries himself very regally, and his speech is refined and polite (though he does curse sometimes). He's polite to people as a default, until they prove themselves to deserve treatment otherwise. He's not an emotional wreck, but he's hardly stoic- he feels and expresses his emotions as he sees fit. Though polite and refined, he's not exactly standoffish- he is used to being called simply "Kael" and not his proper name (and actually requests it of Jaina).
Where most elves, and even his father (who was beloved by their people), were content to withdraw into the woods of Quel'thalas, Kael ventured into the world beyond, and lived among the humans for some time. For a long while, as he lived in Dalaran, he saw them as almost equals, and certainly respected those with mastery of magic. He appreciated human things, even on down to the simple things such as food, though he deeply loves his homeland.
His feelings toward certain humans were different from how many elves would see them, including the mage in training, Jaina Proudmore. Where many elves would dismiss her as a mere human, Kael had very deep feelings for her. It hurt him very deeply that she did not return his feelings- and worse, that she chose the human prince Arthas over himself. Though he would have been unable to give her a life as a proper member of the Silvermoon court, he still wished to show her his homeland. I feel that he was almost idealistic, guided entirely by his heart when it came to her, and though it was unrequited, I feel that he did love her.
Conversely, where Kael felt love for Jaina, he only feels loathing for Arthas Menethil. Arthas was, to start, a rival for Jaina's attentons, and became someone who "stole" her from him, and he disliked him intensely for that. That alone was enough to earn the prince's polite anger, but Arthas wronged him further. Arthas was responsible for killing many of the High Elves, and for destroying their home. Among the dead was Kael's father, Anasterian. For all of this, Kael will never forgive Arthas, no matter how "redeemed" he becomes, I feel.
Kael's story started with him being a hero, and I feel that he started off with completely good intent. He tried to save his people as best he could, and his first acceptance of aid from Lady Vashj was hesitant. He wanted, desperately, to save his people, and it led him to ruin. Kael's story was not one of a descent into true evil, but one of desperately trying to do the right thing and messing it up, and thinking he could skirt the line between "good" and "evil".
What led him into the descent from "hero" to "raid boss" was his own anger and willingness to allow himself to be used. He felt very deeply betrayed by the humans, following the racism of Garithos and his imprisonment in the Dalaran sewers. He was desperate to save his people from slaughter at the hands of the humans, and he was somewhat gullible in accepting Vashj's help- but it was his only "true" option at the time. His choice was to ally himself with demons- and the only real alternative he had was to be executed and his people to die from withdrawals from arcane magic.
I don't mean to say that his actions were entirely inexcusable- but like any good antagonist, Kael honestly felt that he was doing the best he could up to the bitter end. His words when confronted in Tempest Keep are about his people, and his "dying" words were "For Quel'thalas!" To the very end, he felt very deeply for his people and wished to lead them to a better life. However, in his desperation to save the Blood Elves, he made some very foolish choices and got wrapped up in his own quest for revenge- for example, he didn't have to destroy Kirin'Var Village in the Netherstorm, but he did so out of spite of the Kirin Tor and how they had betrayed him. He didn't need to ship the Naaru M'uru back to Silvermoon City, but he did, because he was being driven by anger at the time.
Things went awry mostly because Kael was desperate, and angry, and partly because he allowed himself to be used. He wasn't a complete fool with Illidan and Vashj were manipulating him- he partly believed their words, and partly knew he was damning himself. He did what he felt was necessary to save his people, even if that meant sacrificing himself in the process. This is discussed in the short story "In the Shadow of the Sun", where the Grand Magister Rommath (who followed Kael into Outland and returned to Quel'thalas to teach them how to siphon demonic magic) says that Kael told him that he knew he was being used, but that Rommath didn't argue with him (he wished he had).
As a leader, Kael'thas felt very deeply for his people, though he never properly took the title of King, and instead styled himself as "the Sun King". I personally feel that this is because he didn't want to take on the full mantle of leadership- he knew he had to, but some part of him was still wishing he could return to Dalaran as it was. That, and taking the title of King would mean admitting his father was dead. I feel that, though every Blood and High Elf suffered losses as a result of Arthas' siege of Quel'thalas, Kael felt very keenly that he had lost a great deal more than half a city. He lost his father, a good number of his people, and lost his life as a high-ranking mage of Dalaran.
Though I don't think the lengths he want to were justified, and I'll admit that Kael'thas has a very hot temper, I feel that, in the end, he was honestly just trying to do the best he could. He was dealt a really crappy hand and made some very poor choices. His end was deserved, but the Blood Elves have survived.
Barge Reactions: Kael, luckily, is a rather open-minded elf, as explained above. I feel he will naturally be curious about the barge and ports and such, and treat it mostly as if it were magic. He's seen everything from boats to spaceships to magic portals, I don't think much would be beyond him to accept as "real".
That said, he will be less than pleased when he first arrives. He would not enjoy the thought of having to do menial labor (he's never done anything like that in his life), to be sure. He'll hate having his powers stripped from him, and will probably want to get back to Outland, his people, and Kil'jaeden posthaste. He'd also find the abundance of humans off-putting, but will eventually come to enjoy their company again.
Path to Redemption: The easiest and most simple way to get through to Kael is to appeal to him as the leader of his people. Those with good behavior may be able to return some day? If he can go back to his people by buying into this whole "redemption" bit, he would. Despite everything, he loves his people very deeply, and wants to save them from anything he can.
Though I would find it cruel, he can be rewarded or punished very easily by denying him a source of magic to tap into and "feed" on. He'd find being rewarded with it distasteful, but without it, he grows very weak.
Kael, I think, will eventually come around if he's reminded enough of why he trusted humans and other races in the first place, and if he comes to accept his own faults. It will just take time, and patience, to deal with Mr. Aloof. Remind him why he trusted the humans, give him time to examine his own actions, removed from desperately trying to save his people, and I think he'll come around.

Sample Journal Entry: Though some might find this place intriguing, I'll admit that it's nearly more an annoyance than an adventure. The concept of "redemption" seems beyond anything I care for at the moment- redemption is for fools who still cling to their "Light". There was no redemption for my people, only vengeance. We have been broken, but have reforged ourselves in the fires of death, and have emerged stronger than we were.
I will do what I must to return to my people and renew my work. However, I sincerely doubt that I can forgive for what has been done to us. Those who have wronged us, who have sent us to slaughter, or who have killed us with their own hands will pay just as dearly as we have. Do not speak to me of redemption and forgiveness.
Sample RP: He wasn't exactly extravagant, by his definitions, but he still found the room to be a bit...small. He was pleased to find it decorated as a fine room might be in Quel'thalas, and the drapery and gilt finery stirred a pang in him. He deeply missed his homeland, his people. Dalaran had been home for some time, but he longed to return to Silvermoon City.
And yet, here he was, on a large ship of sorts, told that he was serving out time for some sins that he could hardly think were uncalled for. He did only what he had to, to ensure the survival of the Blood Elves, and each step he had taken had only been for that. Certainly, some might think him ruthless, but he doubted very deeply that anyone could lead his people and care for them has he did.
...or had, it seemed. There seemed to be no way to return home soon, though he longed to. It seemed that he had to buy into the concept that he had done something deeply wrong to deserve to be punished- and indeed, he was. He had lost much on arrival- not simply left his people. He could sense magic within himself, still, but it seemed nearly diminished. The loss of it was felt as deeply as one might sense the loss of sight or hearing- and it bothered him just as deeply.
Still, if there was a way to return home, he would have to do it. If that meant that he would have to play the fool and allow them to "redeem" him, then he would.
After all, he had done nothing that was wrong.
Special Notes: For as his magic addiction, I'd like to request that he be provided with mana crystals or something of that nature to keep himself from growing too weak, as part of his redemption.
Also, I know it might be funny to pair him with someone who is an opposite to him, for his Warden, but I'd like to request someone who is extremely patient. Possibly also someone who was a magic user, so they'd have common ground? Not sure there!
